Brain Damage

Keanu Gallardo, 14, suffered a concussion at Del Mar High School in San Jose, Calif., but his mother isn't angry about that.

"That's what happens in football," she said. She's less happy about what happened when the ambulance arrived: Principal Liz Seabury refused to allow paramedics to drive it onto the field, instead making them walk the gurney 75 yards down the gridiron to retrieve the boy. "I was told not to let vehicles onto the field," Seabury explained.

"The answer is real simple," school board member Matthew Dean said: "A field is replaceable. A child's life is not." (AC/San Jose Mercury News)
